AB de Villiers Comments on Rohit Sharma's Super Over Controversy Against Afghanistan

India’s 3–0 clean sweep against Afghanistan in the recent T20I series stirred up some controversy, particularly surrounding the second super over in the third T20I. Rohit Sharma, returning to T20Is after 14 months along with Virat Kohli, played a pivotal role in India’s victory. However, the second super over raised eyebrows as Rohit returned to bat, sparking confusion about his status after the first super over.

In the initial super over, Rohit scored 14 runs before heading back to the dugout. According to the guidelines, a player declared out in the first super over cannot bat again in the second. Despite this, Rohit took the crease again, leading to speculations whether he was retired hurt or retired out.

AB de Villiers, the legendary South African batter, weighed in on the incident on his YouTube channel. De Villiers asserted that a player cannot bat again if declared out in the first super over, suggesting that it could be a fault in the broadcast or a scoring mistake.

“Double Super Over, unbelievable (smiles). You can’t bat again if you are declared out in the first super over. I think maybe they will claim that he was retired hurt due to an injury, and maybe it was a scoring mistake to show him out,” De Villiers remarked.

Shifting his focus, De Villiers praised Indian batter Rinku Singh, hailing him as a fantastic player and a consistent match-winner. He emphasized the importance of consistency in players like Singh to secure victories for the team.

“Rinku is a fantastic player, a match-winner, and it is good to see him become consistent as well. You need to be a consistent player who is always trying to win games for your team.”

Rinku Singh’s remarkable T20I performance, amassing 356 runs across 15 games and 11 innings at an average of 89.00 and a strike rate exceeding 176, has positioned him as a notable finisher for Team India.
